Couture and crumpets at the Chateau Laurier

At the historic Fairmont Chateau Laurier on Friday, Baroque music could be heard below the chatter and applause from the women enjoying tea, crumpets and the stunning models showing off Ottawa designer Elena Hinke’s latest collection from Elena’s Creations Fashion House.

The glamorous morning was organized by the Canadian Federation of University Women of Ottawa and presented by the Diplomatic Hospitality group.

Some of the pieces Hinke showcased at the hotel were familiar from Ottawa Fashion Week, but Tom Hinke, Elena’s husband, was eager explain that most of the garments were created especially for the 100th year celebration of the Fairmont Chateau Laurier.

Elena Hinke wanted to create a collection that would appeal to the diplomatic audience invited to the fashion show, said Tom Hinke, adding that the Governor General’s wife was asked to attend.

“This line is geared more towards Hollywood types, celebrities, and royalty,” he said.

It was easy to imagine the intricate gowns on the red carpet in one of many elegant ballrooms at the hotel accessorized with sparkly chandeliers and lavish carpets.

Get a little taste of the lovely morning by checking out some of the photos I took before, during and after the show!

Thanks again to Models International Management for the invitation to photograph the fashion show Friday morning!

Until next time…

Journalism Prom

Congratulations to the Carleton University journalism grad class of 2012! Journalism Prom this week was the perfect way to commemorate the best four years of my life.

It was so great to see all the men dressed so dapper and the women so beautiful. Such a change from seeing everyone stressed and exhausted, freaking out about story ideas and panicking over callbacks. Thank you all for making my night and giving me the “Most Stylish Girl” Award!

Although, my lovely classmates seem think I look awesome for class, finding the perfect outfit for Jprom in Ottawa was no easy task. I’d love to make it seem like I don’t worry about my outfits and I just flawlessly put together cohesive, fashionable ensembles, but that would be untrue. My close friends know that after two mental breakdowns and numerous trips downtown, I finally found something appropriate for a gathering with my professors and a rowdy, formal university prom night.

I went on a hunt for something that was dressy and demure, yet not too fancy. I ended up not being able to find a dress that completed my vision so I went with something plain and a statement necklace to dress it up.

The necklace was actually much more than the dress itself. I played up my simple dress with a bright lipstick, costume jewelry and coloured suede heels for an elegant evening of dinner, drinks, and dancing with my friends and colleagues at Lago on Dows Lake.

My outfit was inspired by the spring/summer 2012 fashion trends and the 1960s. My dress’ mod ‘60s shape, yellow-green retro coloured suede heels and wing tipped eyeliner were all influenced by my love of the Mad Men era.  The colour of my heels and lips are trendy hues this season. The dress’ sheer back paired with an over-the-top necklace, added a touch of modernity so that I didn’t look like I was wearing a costume or just walked out of a time capsule.

The most flattering thing, other than winning my award of course, was the amount of texts, emails and photos I received leading up to Jprom asking for fashion advice. I love to help everyone look their best everyday and especially for memorable moments like prom night! So if you have any questions shoot me an email or leave me a comment below and I’d be honoured to help you with your fashion dilemma.

Until next time…
