Simple bun: sans sock

Who isn’t lovin’ the sock bun? It is cute, fashionable and perfect for mornings when there is just no time to wash and dry your hair.

Many of the girls I work with regularly ask me if I have a sock bun in my hair or how I created such an “adorable bun.” The truth is I have never attempted a sock bun, as I have heard in the blogosphere and from friends that it’s harder than it looks.

Before I cut my hair throwing my hair up in a bun was so easy, but now that it’s six inches shorter I need a lot more pins and a lot more patience.  With all that hair gone and many failed attempts at styling my hair the way I use to, I was starting to worry that I wouldn’t be able to ever again create a massive, beehive-like bun.

But last week when I was over at my best friend Erika’s house she restored my faith by showing me how to make a simple bun without a sock that is just as big, or bigger, than the ones I use to make.

I have said in the past that the best beauty advice comes from friends and this is a great example. So from my best friend to you, below is a step by step guide to create the perfect bun.

1. The recipe for a great bun begins with unwashed hair and a lot of hairspray.

2. Spray hairspray all over your hair and backcomb the front. Backcombing your hair will add a bit of volume to your hair, so that it doesn’t look slicked into the bun.

3. Brush your hair up into a ponytail near the top of your head. Make your pony tail higher or lower depending on how high you want the bun to eventually sit.

4. Now that your hair is in a perfect ponytail, it is time use Erika’s secret and mess it up a little. Backcombing your pony tail like crazy is how to create the volume you need to make a massive, nest-like bun.

5. Wrap your back combed ponytail into the shape you want your bun to be.

6. Once you’ve placed your bun, by wrapping it, pin it where you want it to sit.

7. Once your bun is pinned, add more hairspray and you should have a lovely, large and in charge bun sitting on top of your head!

I hope this was helpful! If you have any more questions, leave me a comment below!

Now go and share your new bun making skills with your best friend, so she can share it with her best friend and so on and so on.

Until next time…

Pretty in a peplum top

This is my first post back home in Vancouver and I am looking forward to becoming part of the huge fashion blogging community in this city.

Ottawa was the perfect place to grow and explore fashion blogging, but as much as I will miss the people and connections I made there I am excited embark on fashion adventures in my hometown.

Now that I am a graduate, I have begun a new chapter of my life. I have a “big” girl job now! A new job means a new haircut and new clothes! But this shopaholic couldn’t go to the mall and leave with just office appropriate clothing.  I had to give in to my latest craving and purchase a peplum top.

I was lucky enough to find a peplum top in my favourite colour, mint green!  A peplum top or dress is a must have item this season. They complement a petite frame and a peplum top can go great with a pair of skinny jeans or any other fitted pair of pants.

The peplum top below makes me feel so pretty and flirty that I cannot wait to wear it all spring and summer. Now all I need is an adorable West Coast boy to take me on a walk along the seawall so that I have a reason to rock my peplum top!

Bead bonanza and GIVE AWAY!

Fashion is all about creativity. Stylists create their artistic vision by pulling together complementary textures, shapes and colours to create a fashionable and flattering outfit.

I love to use accessories to tie an outfit together or as the focal point on my ensemble. I am a sucker for wearing one too many bracelets and buying one too many chunky necklaces.

But sometimes finding the right piece of jewellery at the mall to complete my vision can be difficult. Once I am exhausted by hunting for what I want, I will go to the bead shop to make it myself. I have been making jewellery since I was really young and it has always been one of my favourite pastimes.

The best place to find anything to make your own accessories in Ottawa is Sassy Bead Co. located in the Byward Market and the Glebe. Before I moved back home to Vancouver I had to get a little creative with my friend Caileen at Sassy Bead one last time.

Usually when I go to the bead store I know what I am going to make, but knowing that Sassy Bead Co. is seriously the mecca of all bead stores I knew that I could just go and be inspired. I am a Latin American history buff, so the warm coloured skulls and the pretty, feminine flower beads reminded me of “Dia de Los Muertos, or the “Day of the Dead”, a holiday celebrated in Latin America.

To show my appreciation to all you followers I decided to share my love for jewellery making by giving away one of my one-of-a-kind bracelets!

To enter your name in the draw to win a bracelet, tweet this message:

“I follow Lo’s Stylebook and I just entered to win a one-of-a-kind bracelet by @lorenromei #losgiveaway”

Next week I will announce the winner on my blog and the lucky individual will receive the red skull bracelet (shown below) in the mail!

Good luck everyone and thank you for entering!

Until next time…
